Over the past week, Apple has completely dominated the world of technology news. While the new features iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite are certainly exciting, there were many other interesting items and tidbits that came to light outside of WWDC.

1. Google Chrome Overtakes Microsoft Internet Explorer in the United States. While Chrome has been the browser of choice on a global basis since 2012, it has now surpassed Internet Explorer in the U.S.   According to the Adobe Digital Index, Chrome now controls 31.8 per cent of the U.S. as compared with 30.9 per cent for Internet Explorer.
2. Amazon to Launch Smartphone This Month. Multiple sources are reporting that Amazon will unveil its first smartphone on June 18^th. Whether or not it will feature the rumoured 3D display is still up for debate.
3. Windows 8 Start Menu Delayed Until 2015. According to a report on ZDNet, Windows 8 users may need to wait a bit longer for the much-anticipated return of the Start Menu. Many had expected it to be included in the Windows 8.1 – Update 2 release this fall, but it now appears that it will be delayed until 2015.
4. Google Glass Designer Frames Coming Soon. Starting on June 23^rd, individuals will be able to select from five designer frames when they purchase Google Glass. Sunglass versions will also be available in eight eight different shades, making Google Glass even more cool.
5. Faster In-Flight Broadband Connectivity Available in 2016. Inmarsat – a UK-based satellite provider – announced that it plans to launch a new 4G service for aircraft flying in European airspace. Several airlines, including British Airways, are believed to be already in discussions with Inmarsat.
6. PlayStation Portable Being Discontinued. Sony announced this week that it will cease production of the PlayStation Portable gaming system this year. While its successor – PlayStation Vita – has been available since 2011, it has never sold well.
7. Scientists Crack Shatterproof Screen Problem. For years, companies have been trying to create a shatterproof screen. A team of scientists reported the creation of a super-strong screen this week composed of metal electrodes attached to a layer of polymer. It is even cheaper to produce than current conductive screens.
8. Tetris Turns 30. The popular puzzle game – Tetris – turned 30 years old this week.   Created by a programmer in the Soviet Union, it was the first game to be exported from the USSR to the United States. It is regarded as one of the greatest games ever created.
9. CIA Tweets for First Time. The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) posted its very first tweet this week. It read, “We can neither confirm nor deny that this is our first tweet.” The tweet was a joke about its often used phrase when it seeks to dodge journalist questions.
10. Samsung Tizen Smartphone Coming this Fall. The first smartphone to be powered by Samsung’s Tizen operating system will be released in the third quarter of this year. The Samsung Z will initially be launched in Russia with additional markets being added over time. It attempted to launch a smartphone running Tizen earlier this year in France and Japan, but carriers in those countries backed out at the last minute, saying that not enough demand existed for the new operating system.
