Star Wars: The Force Awakens tops Avatar to become #1 movie in America
Star Wars takes Avatar’s number 1 domestic spot
With Star Wars: The Force Awakens breaking almost every box office record, it was only a matter of time until it finally surpassed Avatar.
J. J. Abrams latest installment in the Star Wars series Star Wars: The Force Awakens has made box office history as it is the first movie since 2009 to top the domestic haul which was done by Avatar. The Force Awakens has now passed Avatar’s $760.5 million and has now claimed the number one spot. It took James Cameron’s 3D breakthrough months to reach the #1 spot while the J. J. Abrams helmed Star Wars not only beat that record but did it in a mere 3 weeks.
Even though this is a huge accomplishment for Lucasfilm and Disney, The Force Awakens is still a long way from reaching the $2.78 billion Avatar made worldwide, it is currently sitting at $1.54 billion and even though it still has yet to open in China predictions for worldwide achievement have the the movie only finishing around $2.2-2.4 billion mark. Nonetheless it will probably pass Titanic’s $2.19 billion becoming the second most highest grossing movie of all time. As of right now only two films have ever earned $700 million or more in North America: Avatar, and The Force Awakens.
Now the question is if Star Wars will become the first movie to hit the $1 billion mark at the domestic box-office.
